DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

The Vision

tempFileForShare_20211126-173118.jpg

In film, though changes are happening on the forefront, we usually see Asian American women in one of very few roles: the successful professional, the comedic relief, the secondary character. It is rare to hear a primary Asian American female voice; as a main character. If we do hear it, it is heard as a historical or cultural lesson. Or from a very non-Asian perspective - the prototypical ball snatching, fast talking lawyer-dragon-lady or the hyper sexualized, subservient fetish. And these stories are important to tell. And serve a purpose. However, where are the stories and voices of those Asian American women who are “in between?”

The average every day Asian woman who struggles? The artists, creative, independent, self serving agents. The tender, nurturing mothers. The athletes, the fighters. The punk rockers, taggers, musicians. The addicts, the poor, the ones  who struggle with mental health problems. Where is the dimension, the depth, the agency? There are so many more stories; so many more voices.

I hope that my stories will help amplify the voice of these women. So that young Asian American girls – of all shapes, sizes, demographics, sexual orientations – see themselves on the screen and feel like they can relate.; that they are not alone.
